CUPCAKE REVIEW!!!
  • Before starting the review, students had a chance to check their answers and getting any missing information from the Group Behavior reading guide since not all of it was in the text. The answer key is posted below if you need it.
  • Students then complete a series of 35 questions related to a cupcake sitting on their desks. As they completed each page, they were able to check their answers with the key posted around the room (also posted below).

  2. AP Exam Pre-Admin (some students in each class needed to complete the pre-administration process for the AP Exam - those that did not, will be completing it in another of their classes; while they did that, the remaining students continued their review.
  3. Last Lecture and Class Notes of the Year!!! - see PPT below for the last lecture on Groups, Prejudice, Attraction, and Aggression.
Notebooks will be graded in class on Monday (I mistakenly told 3rd period it would be Thursday but it is not until Monday). We will finish the reading guide on Groupthink on Thursday before our review activity.

  3. Handed out Confusing Pairs flashcards and gave students time to fold/glue them. For these ones, the full sheet should be folded in half so the confusing pairs stay together while you study. These are pairs of words that Psych teachers have determined consistent cause confusion for students.

  1. The Case Studies homework was collected and graded while students read and highlighted/annotated their notes on Therapies - pay careful attention to biomedical therapies and the drugs that are used for the different disorders.
  2. Students worked in group to review symptoms and diagnoses on their case studies. They divided the case studies within their groups, used the answer key to check their work, and then explained each case to the rest of their group to check for accuracy.

  1. Projective Tests of Personality - we reviewed the TAT and Rorschach tests as methods to assess personality; students were able to view and respond to the original Rorschach inkblots (see PPT below)
  2. Hand-Made Inkblots - using watercolors and paint, students created their own Rorschach-style inkblots; they experimented with different mediums and styles; in the end they took a picture of 1 or 2 that they will analyze as part of their project

  3. Personality Descriptions Instructions - students were given an envelope and cut up papers in to small strips; they will be using these to ask 20+ people they know to write a one-word description of them which they will analyze as part of their personality mask write-up.
  4. Personality Review using Seinfeld's Soup Nazi - using the handout provided, students watched a series of clips related to the classic Soup Nazi scenes from Seinfeld; students that did not get to finish the analysis in class are encouraged to watch additional clips on You-Tube to help them with their analysis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U49IjF4XyQg)

  1. Peer Assessment of the FRQ we took last week - we graded this one in class so students could see the scoring guidelines and grading process for the AP exam; any FRQs that students wanted me to re-grade, I took care of separately.
  2. AP Score Estimate - using the College Board scoring estimate worksheet, students used their most recent scores to calculate the possible score they could earn on the AP exam; this should help students make an informed decision as payments for AP exams begin next week in the ASB office.
  3. Personality Tests - students took the Jung Typology Personality Test and then 1-2 other tests (I just had them Google personality test) so they could compare and discuss the variations among the tests and the reliability/validity of these types of assessments.   1. Autism Spectrum Disorder Reading Questions - students used a "Close-Up" reading from the text to learn about this cognitive development disorder. To give the reading greater substance, students also watched an informative and interesting BBC video from a girl, Rosie, who has ASD.
  2. Social and Gender Development Group Reading - Each group divided the responsibility of these two topics with each person in the group becoming an "expert" on their topic and then teaching their peers. These topics show up consistently on AP practice exams so it was important for us to study them with some depth. Students answered the questions on their handouts as they completed their readings.
  3. Erikson and Kohlberg Practice Scenarios - if there was time remaining in class, students worked with their partners to identify the stages for each scenario in preparation for the type of questions they will be asked on the unit test (if we didn't get to this in class, students need to complete it on their own).

In class today, students completed a series of three handouts/charts that introduced them to the main components of the developmental psychology unit. They used the computers to first look at their own perceptions of growth and aging, and then analyzed that same topic through the theories of Piaget and Erickson.

Test Day!! After 20 minutes of stress-relief activities, students took the Unit 5 test. At the end of the period, I passed out the at-home project they will be completing over the next two weeks for the Development Unit.

  1. Organize Notebooks - I gave students a review for Wednesday's test (50 questions and 1 FRQ). I borrowed the review of key terms from another teacher and added in some additional review material from other sources. See the Table of Contents below for where to put everything. I'm also including the links for the Crash Course videos related to this unit.
  2. Motivation Overview - since I was out last week, I lectured for a good portion of the class on the key elements of motivation including hunger, sex, and social motivation. We watched several video clips (links are below) related to motivation and eating disorders. Students had already taken notes on most of this overview but they added in the section on sexual motivation.
  3. Stress Research and Relief - Students spent the remainder of class studying the Stress in America survey by the APA and researching recommended methods to relieve stress.

During class they watched Disney's Inside Out and completed a viewing guide which asked them to analyze the movie based on emotional theories and connect it to past learning.
