FAQs

Q-  Does a student  have to audition to be in jazz band?

A-  Yes, and audition is required. But, there are two jazz bands at WRHS and the chances are very good that any student who really wants to participate will find a place in one or the other.  Auditions are held in May for the following school year.

Q-  Can flute players, clarinet players, violinists, etc. be in jazz band?

A-  The standard instrumentation includes only trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and rhythm section players including piano, bass, drums, guitar, percussion, and vibes.  However, flute players can be added.  Clarinet players who want to be in   the jazz band usually learn to play sax, and that has happened very often.  Violinists and other string players would typically have to learn to play bass.

Q-  Does a student have to be in marching band to be in jazz band?

A-  Except for piano players, guitar players, and bass players, students must also be in marching band.

Q-  How much does it cost to be in jazz band?

A-  There is no specific cost or fee required to be in jazz band.  However, students are required to provide their own uniforms (basically black clothing) and to pay their share of any trips and tours.   As a basic philosophy, no student will  be turned away from the jazz band nor from any jazz band activity due to their inability to pay.

Q-  How much time is required for rehearsals and performances?

A-  Recognizing the demands of marching band, there are no extra rehearsals or performances scheduled during the marching band season.  The Studio A Band typically performs a couple of times during the first semester.  During the spring semester, the Studio A band has one afternoon rehearsal per week and both jazz bands participate in several concerts and jazz festivals.  It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that every student in the jazz program also take private lessons.

Q-  Can a student play sports, be in drama, or other activities and also in jazz band?

A-  Yes, a student can be involved in other activities and in jazz band at the same time.
