Objective: You will study and analyze primary source documents to gain background information about New England in the late 1600s.  This information will guide you in your further analysis of the mindset of the people of this region and why they were so willing to accuse innocent neighbors of witchcraft (p.s. “further analysis” means you’re writing an essay on this…).

Text Box: Guiding Question: How does the information gathered from these documents show us that this town was ripe and ready for a witch hunt?

Directions:  In the library, seven (7) stations will be set up, each with different primary documents from the time period of The Crucible.

  1. You and your assigned group will travel to each station to analyze the various documents.
  2. At each station, there will be worksheets to help guide the analyzing process. You will have to decide what type of document you are viewing.
  3. Once you’ve decided, you will complete the worksheet for that specific document.

This information will be used later as “research” for a historical investigation essay.  If you don’t pay attention and gather enough information, you will suffer later when trying to write a well-thought out and coherent essay.  YOU MUST USE AT LEAST SIX (6) OF THESE PRIMARY SOURCES IN YOUR INVESTIGATION ESSAY.  So make sure you gather the information completely.  You will not be able to look at these while writing your essay.
