Track and Field Team sign-ups

It's time to sign up to be a part of one of West Ranch's best athletic programs. Time to commit to one of the school's strongest programs where opportunities for college scholarships are a real possibility not a dream.

We are not hoping for you to follow in the footsteps of last years leading athletes we are looking for you to fill those shoes.

If you hate hard work, commitment to your team, dedication and both personal and team success then West Ranch Track and Field is not for you. We only want "never say die, never quit and never back down" athletes to join in our success.

Sign up for the team will be at lunch break on Wednesday and after school on the minimum day Thursday October 26th and 27th. Sign ups will be held in the small gym.

Try-Outs will be 7th - 18th November.

So, come along sign up then try out.

Note: Not all who try out are guaranteed a place, for this team you have to earn a place

Important announcements

"West Ranch on way to State Finals"

Friday 27th saw three athletes from West Ranch compete in the Masters Meet at Cerritos College. This is the last leg on the road to State Finals in Clovis.

In the shot, Breeann Braucher threw well but failed to advance by a mere 2.75 inches.

In the 800m which was expected to be a highlight of the track events as 11 of the twelve girls were separated by only 3 seconds...

Both Jen Owen and Ashley Welker advanced, both set new PRs and Jen set another new school record.

Last year we got one athlete to State Finals, this year we have two...next year..??

Well done girls !!!

Coach Saville

1) " Like the three Musketeers our girls march on through CIF Finals"

The road to a Track and Field State final meet is a very long and laborious one. It is a seven step process, league prelims, league finals, CIF prelims, CIF finals, masters meet, state prelims, state final.

Three of our girls advanced yesterday to the masters meet this coming Friday. Ashley Welker and Jennifer Owen in the 800m and Breeann Braucher in the shot.

This is no easy passage, the Southern Section of CIF is the toughest in the State, ask Ashley Welker who had to PR and break the school record on her way to qualifying.

Go Girls !!!

2) " West Ranch coach wins prestigious Mt SAC award."

Coach Saville was surprised to be handed the Mt SAC Distance Coach of the Year award while at CIF Finals. Although any coach needs gifted and hard working athletes to be successful it was nice that after two exceptionally good years of distance competition from the West Ranch Track girls the program is being recognized by those outside the district.

Thanks to all those girls that worked so hard when I pushed them !!

"Banquet of 2011, been and gone"

Many thanks to all who attended our end of season celebration last night in the warmth of the large gym. Thanks also for your patience and understanding given that this was a very last minute change. I hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful catering and we did our best to keep things moving. It is always tough to say goodbye to those Seniors but we hope they will come back and see us from time to time, or even to come back and help coach other potential champions.

We had a very successful year and it was good to end it as a group, as a team with Athletes, Parents and Coaches sharing the last hoorah of 2011.

I cannot finish without saying a massive thank you to those parents and coaches who cleaned up in truly sprinter fashion, when clearing a banquet becomes an olympic event, we will be there.

We will be back next season, stronger, fitter, more aggressive and more competitive.

Thanks everyone !!!!

End of 2011 Season and class dismissal

This past season has been another very successful one for the Track and Field team. We have League Prelims and Finals 3rd and 6th May and once this is over, so is the season for most of you.

There will be one last attendance and practice on Monday May 9th at 3:00pm. This will be a quick 30 - 45 minute meeting at the track for of all athletes to review the year and to outline the changes for the 2012 year. No need to change out of normal school clothes for this meeting.

This meeting is compulsory for all athletes, however this meeting will also include your formal dismissal from class for 2011.

Thank You to all donators !!!

On behalf of all the coaching staff I want to say a massive thank you to all those parents and friends of West Ranch Track and Field Team who made donations this year. Your donations, be they in the form of cash or goods, totaled an amazing value close to $4,000. Through your generosity we were able to buy some much needed equipment and these donations contributed massively to the ongoing financial stability of the program.

Your generosity and support is very much appreciated, again Thank You  !!!

Foothill League Prelims and Finals

The Prelims and Finals for our League take place at C.O.C Tuesday 3rd May and Friday 6th May. This is a wonderful opportunity to compete against the best in our very strong Foothill League.

The format is as follows:

Track events other than the Varsity 3200m will have prelims Tuesday and Finals Friday. Winner of the Finals advances to CIF Prelims as do the 2nd and 3rd places if they make the qualifying time. There is

also an "At Large" time which, if met, qualifies for CIF Prelims. "At Large" provides an opportunity for those outside of the first three places to advance if there was a particularly high standard final.

Fesh/Soph and JV 3200m is a straight Final on Tuesday.

Fresh/Soph and JV Field events are also a straight Final on Tuesday.

Friday competition comprises:

Finals for all track events including the  4 x 100 and 4 x 400 except Fresh/Soph and JV 3200m

Finals for all Varsity Field events.

Times -  Tuesday, Field Events commence at 1:00pm and Track at 2:00pm. Class release for those athletes     competing Tuesday will be 11:30am, buses leave at 12:00.  Friday, Field Events commence at 4;00pm and Track commences at 5:00pm.  There is no transport for the Friday events, be at COC at least one hour prior to the start.

Track and Field Team Banquet

This wonderful celebration of our season will take place on Monday 16th May, commencing at 7:00pm.

Catering will again be provided by "StoneFire Grill" and we will be set up using the outside auditorium.

As a result of our other fundraising efforts we are able to keep ticket costs for this event to a minimum at $5 a head, athletes and parents. Where else in town can one feast in the open air for such a meagre amount?

Tickets will be available from me all next week, at the track and at League Prelims and Finals.

West Ranch girls make strong showing in State Top 50 rankings

Keep your eyes on the website and talk to the coaches.

A few athletes have asked if they can train during the "off" season when school recommences. I will check on the availability of the track. However this will be at the discretion of your particular coach.

"HOT HOT NEWS - West Ranch wins Overall Girls Distance Trophy at Mt SAC"

At the recent Mt SAC Relays, the meet that attracts teams from all over the state and country West Ranch comes away with a major trophy.

Trophies are awarded for various combined events such as sprints and distance races and points are awarded for all of the races in that category. At the end of the 2 days the scores are totaled and the winner walks away with a plague.

After 2 days of very competitive hard fought racing we knew we were in contention but believed we had to do well in the DMR to take the trophy.

The DMR team ran within seconds of its seasons' best but against such tough competition we thought it not enough.

OK, blame the coach, occasionally he does get it wrong as evidenced by an email from the organizers, after a prompt to me from a parent who had heard the announcement on the streaming video.

Congratulations to all the Mt SAC athletes in no particular order.....Jen Owen, Maggie and Sam Phillips, Ashley and Taylor Welker and Kendahl Waalk.

Great job girls !!!!!!

"West Ranch shines again under the lights and the sun"

Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of April saw a select bunch of girls competing at the very competitive Arcadia Invitational meet. This meet, which attracts athletes from all over the country, is one of the most prestigious in Southern California.

Our girls really turned on a display of power, determination and competitive spirit.

Friday night saw our Varsity 4 x 800 team post a very creditable time of 9 mins 32 secs and a 4th place which will move them up in the top 15 state rankings.

Saturday saw Jennifer Owen double up in the open 1 Mile and open 800m. Of the 45 runners entered in the mile Jen managed an excellent 4th place followed up by an impressive win at the 800 with a seasons best time.

Ashley Welker also ran the 800 and finished a very good 9th with a seasons best time.

Later in the afternoon Breeann Braucher competed in the shot and narrowly missed a top 10 placing.

The evening session under the lights saw our Girls Varsity Distance Medley Relay team hold their own in a very tough race and post a time less than half a second outside their best.

Just shows, we can more than hold our own and compete with the best !!!!

RAFFLE TICKET DEADLINE - MONDAY, APRIL 11TH

All raffle tickets (sold and unsold) and all money collected are due at practice on Monday, April 11th.

" Records tumbling for 2nd successive year"

We all thought that last year was a great one with something like 40 school records being set. Well here we are about half way through our competitive season and the count stands at 17 new records. This doesn't include the records that have been broken multiple times like the Boys Fresh/Soph 4 x 800m which was broken last Saturday for the 4th, yes 4th, time this season.

We may be a smaller squad this year but certainly no less successful !!!

"Thank You"

Big thank you to all those parents that volunteered to help at our first home meet against Valencia. We had a great meet, well run, great concessions, great spirit wear for sale and just all around an admirable event.

I hope we can count on you all being a part of our success again on April 14th when we host Golden Valley.

Thank You, your help is very much appreciated.

"Taylor Welker post top 10 time for Fresh/Soph 1600M"

Yesterday at the Saugus meet Taylor Welker, a Freshman, ran a current year  P.R. which was good enough for a top 10 best in State for the Fresh/Soph 1600m. In a gutsy and determined run she shadowed our own Jen Owen to post a 5:08.70 which places her 9th in State.

Congratulations to Taylor and the whole team for a great performance in less than Californian type weather.

California Relays Meet Report - Friday 18th and Saturday 19th March

Despite temperatures that made conditions feel more like a track meet in Anchorage Alaska and some athletes suffering from sleep deprivation after a late return Friday evening and a ridiculously early start Saturday, we put in a very strong team performance.

Those going into the record books are...

Girls 4 x 1600 Varsity - Phillips S, Waalk K, Welker T, Owen

Girls 1600 SMR Varsity - Welker T, Phillips S, Vasques, Surak

Girls Shot Varsity - Braucher

"Thank - You !!!"

A big thank you to the DellaRipa family who have very kindly donated two EZ-Ups for use at meets. These will ensure we have shade from the heat at our later meets such as Rio Mesa.

Santa Clarita Invitational Report

Saturday saw us attend our first meet of the year held at Canyon High School.

Perfect weather and respectable competition fueled some great performances from our athletes.

Overall analysis....

We won 8 events out of the 42, with a further 5 second places and 8 third places.....what a medal haul.

We also set one meet record in the Varsity Girls Distance Medley Relay with our team of Welker T, Moskul K, Owen J and Welker A.

It doesn't stop there........we also broke two school records, the Boys Frosh/Soph 4 x 800 and the Boys Frosh/Soph Distance Medley Relay. Both Teams consisted of Generoso E, Waalk Z, Miller P and Black J.

Congratulations to all who competed !!!!

"Girls Varsity Distance Medley Relay opens season with 6th fastest time in State"

On 5th March at the Santa Clarita Invitational meet held at Canyon High School the time, 12:44.80 posted by our Varsity Distance team of Welker T, Moskal, Owen and Welker A was, as of 3/13/2011, the 6th fastest in the State.

The record for the year to date is held by Saugus with a time of 12:24.62, a time easily attainable by our talented pool of athletes.

We fully expect to improve on our time significantly at the California Relays this coming weekend.

Internal Meet - We have decided to postpone this event as it clashes with SAT testing. We will reschedule if possible.

TRACK TRY-OUTS, RESULTS AND INFO

After 9 days of try-outs and evaluation of some 208 athletes we, the coaching team, are pleased to announce the athletes that have made the team for the forthcoming season. This has been a very difficult process as, in our hearts, we want to give a place to every athlete but reality is, we only have so many coaches and so much track space.

For those of you that have made the team we expect hard work, commitment and passion along with a strong desire to achieve, not only for yourself but for your teammates.

For those that didn't make the team, thanks for trying.

Hurdlers, Pole Vaulters, High, Long and Triple Jumpers - once the season begins on 10th January, you will have two weeks in order to prove you have the ability to become a competitive athlete. This two week period is your probationary time.

Parents - there will be a Parents Meeting during December, date to be confirmed. This meeting is important, at this meeting we will discuss the coming season, review the try-out period, require orders for uniforms etc for those that are already confirmed onto the team and issue all the other required documentation. We will be taking payment for the Spirit Pack and other expenses. Athlete costs are likely to be in the order of $225.00.

For those athletes who are not, as yet, confirmed on the team, your checks will be due end of the 2nd week of the season.

We have a strong team, with passion, heart and desire, we will succeed and achieve.
