Name Image Activity - Create 5 graphic variations in Photoshop of your name or initials. Each variation should represent you graphically in some way. It could be about your personality, physical characteristics, interests, or any other way that it can connect to who you are.
This project is about the style of the text, not about background images. While backgrounds can be used, the meaning should be communicated through the text style. Looking up Photoshop Text Tutorials is a good way to find interesting text techniques for this project.
Save the files as jpgs and insert them into a word document. Write a brief justification in the word document about each image explaining what the image says about you and what design decisions support that meaning. Save the word document as name images.doc
- A score of 3 would have 5 uniquely different versions of the student's name.
- A score of 4 would have 5 uniquely different versions of the student's name that shows something about the student's interests or personality and above average Photoshop skill
- A score of 5 would have 5 uniquely different versions of the student's name that shows something about the student's interests or personality and excellent Photoshop skill. The word document explains the design decisions that support the meaning in each image.

Four Color Picture - Find a photographic image and recolor it using four colors. It is best if the selected image is a picture of things, not a picture of people. Drawings or cartoon images are not acceptable for this project. Save a copy of the original image as a jpg before you start working. Desaturate the picture and then start recoloring the image. Every pixel on the image must be one of four hues that you select. Parts of the picture can have different lightness and saturation levels to create different shades, as long as no more than four hue values are used. The minimum acceptable saturation level is 20%. Grading will be based on the quality and complexity of the selection work, the use of exactly four hues, and the overall effect of the final image.
Save as a jpg and insert the original and the recolored picture into a word document.
Write a brief analysis statement in the word document giving a 1 to 5 score for each of the following criteria. Justify each score.
- Four Colors
- Exactly 4 Hues = 5 points (Identify the hue numbers in the analysis statement)
- 4 Hues with some desaturated = 4 points
- 3 Hues or 5 Hues = 3 points
- Picture was not desaturated first = 2 points
- Selection Quality
- No missed selection lines = 5 points
- Minor misses = 4 points
- Large number of misses or Obvious misses = 3 points
- Complexity
- Multiple areas/color, complex edges = 5 points
- Limited complex edges/multiple areas = 3 points
- One large simple area for each color = 1 point
- General Effect
- Excellent Overall appearance/color choices with reasons for color choices = 5 points
- Very Good overall appearance = 4 points
- Good overall appearance = 3 points

Color Phrase Poster - Create an 8x10 inch poster illustrating a "color phrase." The phrase is the only allowable text on the poster. The color in the phrase should be the dominant color of the poster. ( Analysis - 10)
- A score of 3 might be an appropriate image with the phrase text added to it. The poster should reflect the meaning of the phrase and have the appropriate dominant color.
- A score of 4 might involve multiple images showing balance and alignment or one or more images that required modification in photoshop. The poster should reflect the meaning of the phrase and have the appropriate dominant color.
- A score of 5 would demonstrate the use of additional photoshop techniques with a clear demonstration of the design principles. The poster would clearly demonstrate the meaning of the phrase with a non-literal image and the appropriate dominant color.
Color Phrase Poster Writing Task: In a new Word document, write a narrative describing the events leading up to and portrayed on your poster that could be used in a book of posters to explain to viewers of your poster what is happening. Through the narrative, the reader should understand the meaning of the phrase. Use details and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the events. (Common Core Standard W.9-10.3: 5 points)
color phrase writing task scoring rubric-
- 5: The writing explains the meaning of the phrase by telling a story related to the images on the poster. Effective use of descriptive and sensory language.
- 4: The writing explains the meaning of the phrase by telling a story related to the images on the poster. Some use of descriptive and sensory language.
- 3: The writing tells a story related to the images on the poster, but does not effectively relate the meaning of the phrase. Some use of descriptive and sensory language
- 2: The writing tells a story related to the images on the poster, but does not effectively relate the meaning of the phrase. Little use of descriptive and sensory language
