Description
Welcome to 12th grade Economics!  This course is a requirement for graduation but can also provide you with a solid foundation in how the economic world interacts at a personal, national and international level.  This semester, you will study supply and demand, productivity, business organizations, and financial institutions. In addition to the economic theory, you will also gain practical financial knowledge and skills that will help you live independently in the world.

    • 25 extra credit questions (could raise your grade as much as 15% but require extra effort and knowledge)
    • Final is it's own category and makes up 15% of your overall grade in the class.
    • Cell phone use during class is becoming increasingly blatant and disrespectful. Therefore, review sheets for the final will only be provided if phones are put away during teaching time each class period.

    • The simulation threw one more curve ball for you at the end. You got in a car accident and need to pay the deductible for your car insurance. You haven't received the bill yet but you can look at your Vendor Selections (under Student Home) and then Car Insurance. Scroll down towards the bottom and you should see the amount of the deductible. Your going to write a check to to AutoRex Insurance to pay this asap - and then add it to your cash flow spreadsheet.
    • Cash Flow Spreadsheet - make sure your final paycheck from today as well as your final credit card payment AND the insurance deductible are included in your spreadsheet before turning it in on Google Classroom.
    • The simulation ends while we are on Spring Break so please make sure any work you need to complete is done.
  2. Missing Assignments - I handed out grade updates for those people that have missing assignment; they had time in class to complete any missing work or make-up quizzes in Juno.

Budget Challenge and Cash Flow Spreadsheet Update - with Spring Break coming, students need to pay their final credit card invoice and update their cash flow spreadsheet with the credit card payment and Thursday's paycheck amount. Cash Flow Spreadsheets must be submitted through Google Classroom by Friday during class.
  3. Renting an Apartment Packet - students worked on the next part of their What's Next project by learning about apartment rentals. They completed the packet in class with their groups and then moved to Google Classroom to complete the 2nd part of the assignment.

  • After learning about competitive markets last week (including monopolistic markets), today students were rewarded with a day of playing monopoly. As part of the game day, students completed a Cash Flow Spreadsheet that tracked the money coming in and out of their own accounts. No homework. Students will have a work day in class to finish writing their free-response questions, complete the Credit and Credit Cards packets, take any missing Budget Challenge quizzes, and turn in any missing assignments. The end of the quarter is next week so Thursday will be a clean up day before moving on to the next unit.

  1. Unit Test Review - I passed out and explained the instructions for the unit review. It is not graded but simply a resource for students to use to prepare for the test. The answer key will be posted on this site on Sunday night. Any textbook chapters you need are also posted below.
  2. Elasticity of Demand and Supply - This was our last section of chapters 4 and 5 to complete before the test. After taking class notes (see the PPT below), students completed the "Applying the Principles" on their own (I've included the key below in case you want it to check your work)
  3. Update Budget Challenge - After grading the Cash Flow Spreadsheet, I made sure that all students had the correct bank balances in their CFS as of 2/29/16. It is now your responsibility to keep it up-to-date through the remainder of the simulation. Students also made sure to pay their cell phone and credit card bills to avoid any late fees. These bills along with their new paycheck amount (you got a raise!) should now be reflected in your CFS.
  4. Finish Supply and Demand Group Project - students had the rest of the period to get their project completed and turned in. Any students that finished early were encouraged to work on their review sheet or the credit and credit cards packet.
Your Unit 2 Test is next Tuesday and the Credit packet is due on Thursday!

      • 40-50 multiple choice and 5 free-response
      • 75% from the current unit and 25% from the first unit

    • End of Quarter 3 is Friday 3/18. The above items will be the last couple of grades added before quarter grades are finalized.
  2. Supply and Demand Project
    • Groups developed a new use for their product from home. On their posters, they needed to create an advertisement as well as 8 graphs showing changes in supply and demand (each member of the group created one of the supply graphs and one of the demand graphs).
    • If you were absent, you still need to complete the graphs (see attachment below) and then add them to your group's poster.
    • 4th period finished their posters during class; 2nd period will have 20 minutes on Friday to finish it.

Demand Practice (in graphs and in words) - after reviewing the concepts of equilibrium, surplus, and shortage, students completed two handouts - one of them asked for students to graph changes in demand; the other one asked them to explain in words changes in demand and the impact on equilibrium.

  1. Supply Class Notes and Application - students completed the notes (see the PPT below) and then completed the applying the principles section on their own; the concepts for supply are pretty much the same as they were for demand except the graphs are inverted.
  2. Students completed the final step of this section by looking at PRICE or the interaction of supply and demand. The class notes are part of the PPT below. After taking notes, students watched Mr. Clifford's Econ video using Indiana Jones to explain supply and demand (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP0j3Lnlazs). Finally, they finished the last application section before turning in their packet.
  3. What's Next Project (Checking Accounts) - students had the rest of the period to begin working on a series of activities that teach them about how checking accounts work and how they write checks; they will have time on Tuesday as well to work on this; it is due next Thursday 2/25 for periods 2/4 and Friday 2/26 for period 7.
Just a reminder that students should make sure that all of their bills are paid in the Budget Challenge simulation to avoid late fees and penalties!

  1. Finish Chapter 2, Section 1 - students used the textbooks to wrap up their comparison of capitalism and socialism by looking at the influence of Adam Smith and Karl Marx.
  2. Class Notes - Characteristics of Free Enterprise (Chapter 3, Section 1) - using the PPT provided, students completed their notes for this section and then had about 15 minutes to complete the Applying the Principles section on the Circular Flow Diagram.
  3. Budget Challenge Week 1 Quiz - we went through the answers to this quiz as a class since much of it was new material (see PPT below)
  4. Cash Flow Spreadsheet - in order to truly understand the budgeting process, students added all of their upcoming payments in February to their spreadsheet so they could figure out if they would have enough money to cover all of their expenses for the month.
** Unit 1 Test (Chapters 1-3) will be next Tuesday 2/9 for periods 2 and 4. This test will involve more critical thinking, problem solving, and application of content than the previous chapter quiz. It will have 50 total points from a mix of multiple choice and free response (it will go in the grade book out of 100 points).

  1.  Students completed the first page of their Chapter 2 notes which asked them to compare socialism and free enterprise economic systems. They also researched one country at each of the five levels of economic freedom based on the 2016 Index of Economic Freedom.
  2. Grade printouts were handed out to all students. Any make-up work is due by this Friday.
  3. We spent the rest of the period with students learning how to pay bills in Budget Challenge and update their Cash Flow Spreadsheets. At this point, students should have their auto insurance (due by 2/8) and credit card (due by 2/6) invoices set to be paid. 
** Unit 1 Test (Chapters 1-3) will be next Tuesday 2/9 for periods 2 and 4 and Wednesday 2/10 for period 7. The goal of today was to get everyone to the same place for the start of the Budget Challenge Simulation.
  1. Vendor Selections - Several students in each class needed to complete their selections so they had time to do that.
  2. Day 1 Activities Worksheet - This was collected in class after students had time to complete it using their reference folder.
  3. Simulation Survey (needs to be completed by Wed. February 3, completion points only)
  4. Statements and Paychecks Pre-Quiz (needs to be completed by Wed. February 3, completion points only)
  5. Buckle-Up Quiz - There is a PPT below that was used to discuss each question and the appropriate response. Often times I will help students with the quizzes as they give us a chance to discuss the topics covered.
  6. Cash Flow Spreadsheet (Google Classroom) - Instructions for getting started with this are on the Day 1 Activities and Cash Flow Spreadsheet PPT below. You will need to open the Spreadsheet through Google Classroom. At this point, you are only changing the first date, adding your starting balance, and recording the five paychecks you will receive during the simulation. We will come back to this next class period.

  1. Group Activity (Principles 6-10) - Students worked in their group to complete the activities/discussions for Economics Principles 6-10. If you were absent, please complete these on your own. 
  2. Chapter 1, Section 3 (Basic Economic Language) Class Notes and Applying the Principles - Students completed their key terms, focus questions, and notes for this section using the PPT attached below. The PPT includes a key to the Applying the Principles section in case you need it to check your answers.
    • The Chapter 1 packet was due before students started the assessment. If it was not turned in at that time, students will lose professionalism points for the packet.
  3. Chapter 1 Assessment - We will be using Juno as our online testing format. Students created their accounts and took the 18 question test before moving on to the Budget Challenge. This will a small "quiz" just to make sure students are paying attention in class and keeping up with the material. Their unit tests will involve more complex questions  compared to a chapter test.
  4. H&R Block Budget Challenge - Students needed to complete the following items during class today. We will finish the "prep" work for the simulation before it starts on Thursday. 
    • Vendor Selections - Using the information packet provided to you, complete your vendor selections until all of the tabs are green. As you complete the selections, you need to justify your choices on the back of the "Day 1 Activities" worksheet which will be collected on Thursday.
    • Pre-Simulation Survey (only completion points)
    • Statements and Paychecks Pre-Quiz (this is also only for completion points; there will be a score post-quiz at the end of the simulation)

Chapter 1, Section 2 (Economics Way of Thinking) Class Notes and Applying the Principles - Students completed their key terms, focus questions, and notes for this section using the PPT attached below. The PPT includes a key to the Applying the Principles section in case you need it for an explanation.
  3. Introduction to the H&R Block Budget Challenge - Students created their project folder which we will be using for reference materials throughout the semester. They watched the introduction video to the Budget Challenge and then began the registration process (I included the instructional video for this as well). With the remaining time in class, students started their vendor selections which they justified on the back of the Day 1 Activities worksheet.
** There will be a Chapter 1 test on Tuesday after we finish Principles 6-10 and Section 3. The test will have 20-25 questions include 2-3 free response questions.

  1. Review of key elements of the syllabus. Please return your signed syllabus by Wednesday 1/20. See PPT below for the review.
  2. Crash Course Economics #1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ez10ADR_gM). Students watched this video as an introduction to what we will be learning as we jump in to our Economics content next week.
  3. I introduced students to Google Classroom which we will be using for their What's Next Project throughout the semester. You can access Google Classroom by simply typing in the name in a search. Once to the site, you will need to sign in to your SCHOOL Google account and then enter the class code.

  4. Once in Google Classroom, students worked on two What's Next assignments: My Career and My Home and Family. If students had the previous What's Next assignment complete, all they needed to do was transfer the information and add some additional research. These two assignments need to be submitted through Google Classroom by class time on Wednesday 1/20.

I was unexpectedly out today due to a sick child at home. 
  1. Students finished the Globalization Webquest that was started on Monday using the laptops in class. Turned in during class.
  2. Students finished the "Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt" questions using the reading resources provided in class. Turned in during class. Here is the video link in case you need to watch the video again: http://apps.npr.org/tshirt/#/title
  3. Students used the laptops to complete the What's Next Project - Assignment #1 which asked them to research their chosen career and develop an idea of what they picture for their life by the age of 30. We will use this information as we continue the What's Next Project throughout the semester.

  3. Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt video and article questions - students watched a video about the global process of making a t-shirt; during the video, they completed a vocabulary sheet with examples of some of the key words; when the video was over, they read four articles that went into more depth on some of the topics and answered questions related to those topics.
