Welcome to Basic Algebra C/D. You will be learning:

  1. introduce contexts in which two quantities can be described by y =ax2+bx+c
    1. have students create the equation that describes the context and graph it
  2. teach students how to complete the square to transform the equation y = ax2+bx+c into y = a(x-h)2+k to more easily graph the equation
  3. introduce contexts in which two quantities can be described by a square root or cube root function
    1. have students create the equation that describe the context and graph it
    2. pose questions about the above mentioned contexts in the form k = the square root or cube root expression, to provide the need for students to learn how to solve these by using the properties of exponents
  4. introduce contexts in which two quantities can be described by a piecewise defined function, whether that be step, absolute value or otherwise
    1. have students create the equation that describes the context and graph it

We will also answer the following essential questions:


  1. How are quadratic functions used to model, analyze, and interpret mathematical relationships?
  2. Why is it advantageous to know a variety of ways to solve and graph quadratic functions?
  3. How do we graph and analyze square root and cube root functions?
  4. When is a piecewise function useful?
