I gave students a handout that summarized the Treatment methods. Students then used that in their groups to analyze a series of scenarios and apply the treatments to them.

    • The version we watched in class had been edited for classroom purposes but you should also be able to find it on YouTube. It is a good analysis of some of the issues surrounding our discussions of psych disorders.
  4. Surveys - we ran out of time to get into our notes so students completed two short surveys on anxiety and fears in preparation for the work we will do on Friday.

Sorry for getting a little off track in the week before Spring Break. We are back now and ready for the final push to AP Exam on May 9 and the end of the semester.
  1. FRQ Scoring - We peer- and self-assessed the FRQs from the test before Spring Break. Each FRQ had two peers score it before the writer self-assessed. I then looked at all three scores and assessed any discrepancies before final scores were assigned.
    • Students then received their final test scores by the end of the period. They will get posted in IC in the next couple of days.
  2. Day 27 Bell Ringer - complete in Google Classroom
  3. Introduction to Psychological Disorders
    • Using the resources posted in Google Classroom, students worked their way through this introduction to Abnormal Behavior. Starting next class, we will be working through each of the categories of abnormal behavior and how they are treated.
    • This should have been completed during class so students could focus on the "Testing and Individual Differences" packet as homework.
HW: Testing and Individual Differences Packet (handed out before Spring Break). There will be a quiz on Wednesday and this packet will get turned in. We are not covering this topic in class at all so students are 100% responsible for their own study of it.
 
EXTRA CREDIT REVIEW PROJECT - The instructions are posted below as well as in Google Classroom. You will need one of the booklets provided in class in order to complete it. Your completed Sketch Notes Review Booklet is due on Friday, May 3.

EXTRA CREDIT PRACTICE QUESTIONS - The first six units will be available in JupiterEd from 6:00 tonight until 6:00 PM next Tuesday 3/19. This first round of them are worth 1 point each extra credit on the next unit test grade. The next five practice tests will be available starting next Tuesday for one week. Since that is more recent material, those will be worth 2 points each on the next unit test grade. This will be the ONLY extra credit opportunity for the upcoming unit test.

Today was our de-stressing ink blots and painting day! Students had a fun day creating the ink blots for their personality project and creating a painted canvas with their one motivational word. They will have a little bit of time on Tuesday to finish if they didn't get completely done.

Today students watched the Aron Ralston story. Aron was a hiker who became trapped in Blue John Canyon in Utah by himself. After 6 days, he had to cut off his own arm in order to survive. The video we watched was an NBC special where Tom Brokaw takes Aron back to the canyon to hear his story. Students filled in notes in their packet as they watched making connections to the various motivational theories they had learned about in the previous class.
 
If you were absent, please watch the video on your own. Below is the link to Part 1. From there it is easy to get to the other 5 parts. Each part is about 13-15 minutes.

  1. Cognitive Learning - Students completed the "Check Yourself" section and then turned this in to be graded.
  2. Bend Your Brain Activities - Students worked with their groups to complete these activities and turned them in for a Bell Ringer grade.
  3. Students had the rest of the period to complete everything in their packet through page 11. This should get everyone through the encoding process of memory and allow us to move forward on Thursday.

    • After struggling to find a focus for our Wellness Wednesday's last semester, I have turned to "The Mindfulness Journal" as our focus for this semester.
    • Students first read an article about mindfulness while annotating and noting the connections to psychology.
    • Students then completed a writing prompt (by hand; see handout below) on Finding Gratitude.
  2. QUIZ - Classical Conditioning
    • Students had a few minutes to review the key for the Classical Conditioning practice problems (see below) before they took the quiz.
    • If you were absent, please make arrangements to take the quiz before the end of next week. The quiz was open-note.
  3. Class Notes - Operant Conditioning
    • We only finished the first page (front and back) of the notes and then students spent a little time on the first section of practice scenarios. We will continue on Friday.
